Komal Shah, an Indian native, ventured to France to pursue her dream of becoming a French language educator. After completing her Master’s in Didactique des langues — Ingénierie de formation pour l’enseignement du FLE et des langues from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle — Paris 3, she now works back home in India as a French as a Foreign Language (FLE) teacher in the Alliance Française network. She also hosts the “Life in France” Podcast, which offers a unique insider’s perspective on living in France. Through practical tips and inspiring stories, she helps students navigate cultural nuances and build a strong support network, making their French adventure truly unforgettable.

Her journey is a testament to the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone, embracing challenges, and constantly striving for growth.

What motivated you to choose your course in France?

It was an easy decision for me once I started teaching French as a foreign language in India. After doing my Diplôme Supérieur d’Aptitude (DSA) at UGA, which was my initiation into teaching French, pursuing a Master’s felt like the next best step. I had always dreamed of being a student at the Sorbonne, so when I received the acceptance letter, there was no hesitation — it felt like home. My interest in education and language learning aligned perfectly with the opportunity to study in France, a place renowned for its approach to language education.

What challenges did you face moving from India to France?

Honestly, it was the need to step out of my comfort zone that posed the biggest challenge. While my Indian upbringing instilled a strong work ethic, it also limited my professional exposure.

Moving to Paris provided a unique opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and embrace new challenges. Being in a new country meant I had to actively seek out learning opportunities and be open to them in order to immerse myself in the dynamic international environment that France offered.

Once in Paris, it was up to me to embrace those moments of discomfort, and that helped me grow tremendously, both as a person and a professional. I’ve since developed a broader skill set and a more nuanced understanding of being truly global. This experience not only enhanced my professional capabilities but also fuelled my ambition to make a significant impact on the global stage.

Let’s talk about navigating language barriers in France.

Absolutely. I mean, living in France means navigating through mostly the language barriers if not through the administrative maze in order to truly appreciate your time in France. Therefore, having learnt French before going to France is key to success! I realised just how much the French appreciate when we as foreign students/residents make an effort to speak their language. Beyond that, it helps one navigate life in France with so much ease, especially when you need to deal with daily activities like grocery shopping or asking for directions. It’s a gateway to feeling more integrated, and as someone who works in education, language fluency was vital for me both professionally and personally.

How did you manage your finances while studying in France?

Studying at a public university made the tuition fees affordable. My first-year fees were around €250, plus the sécurité sociale. In the second year, it was the same, with the addition of the CVEC (Contribution de Vie Étudiante et de Campus — a mandatory student life and campus contribution fee). Initially, I financed myself, but I soon picked up a part-time job to ease the financial pressure. I also received a scholarship from Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris (CIUP), where I stayed. In addition, I did two internships that covered most of my expenses, which allowed me to explore and enjoy life in France as a student. Blending into French culture was as important to me as studying.

What advice would you give to Indian students aspiring to study in France?

I’d say, first and foremost, learn French! Even if you’re just starting, knowing the basics will help you find your way around.

Whatever the schools and higher education counsellors sell when you go to learn about what course to choose in France as your next big step, learning the language IS KEY (read : VERY IMPORTANT).

Another crucial thing is to step out of your comfort zone. Don’t get stuck in communities that limit your experiences — immerse yourself in the local culture and make friends. Always keep an open mind and be ready to adapt. It’s also important not to rely solely on your degree to land a job. Work on your soft skills, like communication and relationship-building, as these are key to succeeding in the competitive global job market.

What was your biggest takeaway from your time in France?

I think the biggest takeaway for me was learning to be in a continuous state of evolution, both personally and professionally. But over and above that, I also learnt the joy that one gets from following one’s passion, exploring the unexplored and learning to take action.

Life in France taught me the importance of embracing lifelong learning, being adaptable, and developing resilience, and I believe it’s important to carry this mindset with you no matter where you are.

My time in France, especially at the Sorbonne, helped me broaden my perspective, overcome fears and above all the joy of building myself up. I realised that moving away from home teaches you so much more than what’s in the curriculum — it changes how you view the world and your place in it.
