Working in France: Amit Pandita, Interface Engineer

Securing a position in a competitive, international industry is no small feat. Amit Pandita, an accomplished Interface Engineer in the Oil and Gas sector, takes us through his unique journey, from earning his MSc in Applied Engineering at École Centrale de Nantes in France to navigating a career as a mediator between engineering disciplines.

His career wasn’t planned out in a linear fashion; rather, it was an unexpected opportunity, presented by a headhunter, that opened the door to his current role. But was it just luck that led him to this opportunity, or did Amit possess the right blend of skills and adaptability to thrive in a role where few are able to?

Let’s find out…

Could you tell us about your educational background and how it shaped your career?

I completed my MSc in Applied Engineering from École Centrale de Nantes in 2011. Opting to study in France was a game-changer. The program was rigorous and offered a strong blend of advanced engineering principles and practical applications, which prepared me to tackle complex technical challenges.

After finishing my degree, I began my career in India with Naval Group, where I worked as a Submarine Systems Engineer. This role gave me a solid foundation in system engineering and exposed me to the intricacies of defense technologies. In 2016, I transitioned to a role where Bombardier was the client, focusing on train system engineering. This experience expanded my expertise in managing large-scale, multi-disciplinary projects.

By 2020, I returned to France to work for EDF as a Nuclear Interface Engineer. This role marked a significant milestone, as it allowed me to bring together the skills I had built over the years, including technical expertise and effective coordination across various engineering domains.

Tell us a bit about your current role as an Interface Engineer.

My job as an Interface Engineer is essentially to act as a mediator between different engineering disciplines. I ensure that all interface processes are correctly handled, which includes managing data exchange and aligning objectives across teams. The goal is to maintain a seamless workflow while keeping the quality and technical standards high.

One of the core challenges is ensuring that every interface is handled correctly. This demands not just technical knowledge but also the ability to manage interpersonal dynamics and understand each team’s unique requirements.

You weren’t in France when you got this job. So how did you secure your current role?

I wasn’t actively looking for a new position when I first heard about this role. A headhunter reached out to me with an opportunity that matched my skill set perfectly. I wasn’t expecting it, but I decided to explore the offer.

Sometimes, the best opportunities come when you least expect them. In this industry, having a unique skill set can attract opportunities even when you’re not actively looking.

What was it like transitioning from India to working in France?

The job market here in France is different in some ways. I wasn’t asked about my previous salary, and this made negotiating offers a smoother experience. It allowed me to focus on my skills and potential rather than past compensation. France has a stronger focus on valuing individual expertise, which made the process feel less restrictive.

What skills or qualities have helped you most in your career?

Being able to admit mistakes and learn from them has been important. Also, managing the relationship with my manager and communicating clearly have been key skills. It’s not just about the technical side; being adaptable and building positive working relationships is equally critical.

Amit’s journey as an Interface Engineer in the Oil and Gas sector exemplifies how combining skill with adaptability and a willingness to seize new opportunities can lead to professional growth. His educational foundation in France, coupled with real-world experience, has made him a sought-after professional. As he continues to mediate complex engineering projects, his story is a powerful reminder of the value in cultivating both technical expertise and interpersonal acumen.
