Student Story: Subhesh Krishnan, MSc in Hospitality Management (IMHI) at ESSEC Business School

Subhesh Krishnan, a graduate of ESSEC Business School’s prestigious MSc in Hospitality Management (IMHI) program and recipient of the 2024 Divers’IMHI Scholarship, shares his experience transitioning to France, balancing academic and entrepreneurial ambitions, and pursuing his passion for luxury hospitality.

Tell us about your professional background and academic journey.

Before joining ESSEC, I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Hospitality Management from the Business & Hotel Management School in Lucerne, Switzerland. I also earned certifications like WSET Level 3 Wines and Certified Hospitality Supervisor (AHLEI).

With over seven years of experience in luxury hospitality, I’ve held roles at The Ritz-Carlton, Marriott, and St. Regis Resorts. My work has focused on improving guest satisfaction, streamlining operations, and fostering inclusive workplace cultures.

Guided by the philosophy, “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be,” I’ve pursued every opportunity to grow personally and professionally.

Why did you choose France for your studies?

France is globally renowned for its leadership in luxury, tourism, and gastronomy — fields deeply intertwined with my career aspirations. The MSc in Hospitality Management at ESSEC, Europe’s first master’s program in this field, stood out for its strong reputation, academic rigor, and industry relevance.

Additionally, studying in France allowed me to immerse myself in the French way of living and gain firsthand exposure to a country celebrated for its hospitality excellence. My decision was further motivated by my entrepreneurial plans to launch a startup focused on French Cognacs, a venture that aligns perfectly with France’s rich cultural heritage.

How did you prepare for your move to France?

Preparation was key to a smooth transition. I started early, focusing on practical aspects of moving abroad. Paperwork was the most challenging part of the move. Preparing documents like birth certificate translations and understanding French bureaucracy required patience and attention to detail. Navigating cultural differences was another learning curve. Basic French helped me with daily interactions and adapting to life in Paris, an expensive but vibrant city.

What challenges did you face during your studies?

One of the most crucial aspects was managing finances. Living in Paris requires careful budgeting. The Divers’IMHI Scholarship provided significant support, enabling me to focus on my studies and professional growth without undue financial strain. The scholarship, generously funded by IMHI alumni and the NEWH Paris network in partnership with Hyatt, underscores the power of community and the importance of giving back.

Handling bureaucracy and opening a bank account were initially overwhelming due to unfamiliar processes. However, I found that persistence and seeking help from university resources went a long way.

What advice do you have for prospective students?

For those planning to study in France, my advice is:

• Start early: Begin the application process well in advance to avoid last-minute hurdles.
• Learn French: Even basic proficiency can help with daily interactions and cultural adaptation.
• Leverage resources: Use your university’s forums, networks, and support services to navigate challenges like housing and paperwork.
• Network: Connect with fellow students and alumni for guidance and mentorship.
• Be financially prepared: Plan your budget carefully to accommodate living expenses in cities like Paris.

Most importantly, embrace the cultural differences and immerse yourself fully in the experience. It’s an incredible opportunity for both personal and professional growth.

What are your future plans?

I’m actively seeking job opportunities that align with my experience and interests in luxury hospitality. At the same time, I’m pursuing my entrepreneurial dream of establishing a startup focused on French Cognacs. This venture combines my passion for hospitality with the unique cultural and historical significance of Cognacs.
